Let's start with Cons, end with Pros. For what it's worth, I think "Inland Empire" is an unparalleled psycho-metaphysical odyssey.

cons:
all digital (miss the richness in color of analog)
30 minutes extra material in middle of film
on the downslope of psycho-metaphysical themes starting with twin peaks (identity)
loved the film! but this has got to be the culmination, perfection, and termination of some wonderful themes. if Lynch doesn't move on from said themes we should be concerned. at the moment, however, freak out with it and enjoy.

This eagerly anticipated film is a sophisticated puzzle about time and reality, and finds American legend David Lynch in excellent experimental form.

Laura Dern plays Nikki, an actress offered a role in a film directed by Kingsley (Jeremy Irons). Co-star Devon (Justin Theroux) is warned to keep things professional since Nikki's husband (Peter J. Lucas) is fiercely possessive. Early in the shoot they learn the script, based on a Gypsy folktale, is a remake of a movie that never got finished because the original leads were murdered.

Laura Dern's fantastically rendered performance propels this mysterious, atmospheric film about a woman in trouble. David Lynch expertly navigates the dreamlike terrain of his film with humor and profound resonance, allowing the rapturous Dern room to shine in this emotionally powerful story. Lynch’s ever-assured direction combines naturalistic and surrealistic elements to create a wholly mesmerizing film.
http://fondation.cartier.com/

Since his years at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, David Lynch has always devoted a considerable part of his creative activity to the visual arts. The most complete exhibition of this work to date, The Air is on Fire reveals this essential though littleknown aspect of his creativity. Presented in Paris at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain from March 3 to May 27, 2007, the show brings together the various forms of expression employed by this versatile artist whose desire to paint has remained since childhood.

The Air is on Fire brings together a large ensemble of works produced since the 1960s: paintings, photographs, drawings, works on paper, experimental films, and sound environments were created especially for the occasion. Over 500 sketches and other notes carefully conserved by the artist in two binders, with no particular system of organization, are shown in their entirety. The Distorted Nudes series, composed in 2004 of digital images made by modifying scanned erotic photographs taken between 1840 and 1940, is also being shown for the first time. Lynch’s very first short films are screened in a small theater inspired by his film Eraserhead (1977), and he has transformed one of his drawings into a space through which visitors may wander and where they are invited to discover both its inside and outside. Rendering the exhibition itself a fully-fledged work of art, Lynch has designed steel structures with curtains or canvases as supports for his paintings, and transformed a set of interactive sound pieces into sculptures.

The remarkable book that accompanies this exhibition reproduces most of the featured works. With the exception of the paintings, these are deliberately presented with neither titles nor dates, excluding all chronology in accordance with David Lynch’s wishes. The film stills featured evoke his cinematic universe. The publication comes complete with a double CD, recorded on December 15, 2006, on which the artist recalls memories and personal anecdotes while flipping through the 450 pages mock-up of the book.

An artist through and through, David Lynch was personally involved in every aspect of this exhibition, rendering it a “total work of art” that embraces not only the multiple facets of his visual art production but also his passion for music. This passion is also manifest in the program of concerts that he has conceived for the Nomadic Nights series within the context of the exhibition.
Revealing the multiplicity of an incomparable oeuvre, The Air is on Fire coincides with the European release of David Lynch’s new film, INLAND EMPIRE. It offers a unique insight into his creative process and invites viewers to go deep into a fascinating and dizzying creative universe.

David Lynch has arrived, a review of ‘Inland Empire’: a Psychedelic Trip Report

How can I say that David Lynch has arrived as if he was some up-and-coming director that just released his first movie? Because I just walked out of ‘Inland Empire’ seven hours ago and was too exhausted to tackle this recommendation. I ended up getting something to eat and after five hours of restless sleep I think I’m ready to at least pique your interest enough to consume David Lynch and go for a ride.

I want to get one thing out of the way before I go any further. The actors in this movie will blow you away. They catch you by surprise and amaze you with delight. If you are a casting director then this movie will teach you how to put the right people in the right place. If you are a director then you better line up now and make sure your script is strong enough and your vision brilliant, because if you win the lottery then you may hope to get the opportunity to work with at least one of these people. And if you think you are an actor then these roles, this director, this movie, this experience would have been an opportunity of a lifetime, if you could have pulled it off to perfection the way it was done by everyone involved. The flawless range of characters played by each individual actor will make you wish you had the ability to play just one of the personas from these schizophrenic personalities.

With ‘Inland Empire’, Lynch takes chaos, creates order within multiple timelines, through multiple characters, portraying different realities, each one more psychotic then the previous, just to tell us that life is worth the ride. He’s used psychedelic patterns everywhere and in every form. From the set and soundtrack, to the lighting and script, Lynch’s directing bonds every inch of the screen, playing with our emotions and sense of reality as if we were children trying to grasp the drama that comes with growing up.

Just when you think a perspective has been understood it changes. Infinite possibilities converge to a coherent rant that dissipates instantaneously, brining to light a pathway that leads into a panoramic view of a reality before unseen.

The story is not the movie, the experience is. The emotional roller coaster that Lynch takes us on makes the worst psychedelic journey seem palatable. Within fractions we are taken from laughter to perplexity, to a fear that makes your bones rattle to the core, not just for an instant, but for a duration that is long enough to melt into other perspectives. A princess becomes a prostitute, a lover a killer, a victim the hunter. Wives and mothers turn into disease ridden homeless whores doing a dance routine that puts a smile on your face, providing an interlude before you are catapulted into the next wave.

The events in this convoluted pulsating smorgasbord bring you to the brink of madness. The reasoning behind each word spoken, each sound bite, each gesture pointing towards the unknown just around the corner makes you heart misfire. You are unaware of your hypnosis until it’s too late. The logic embedded within each scene makes you believe each reality and possible outcome, witnessing the events unfolding with awe.

I’m not sure how Lynch did it, or how the actors maintained their sanity knowing exactly which lives they were living. It’s possible that the nexus is the lighting, or is it the music? I can not be sure because I have only experienced it once. Like all-powerful psychedelic journeys it will require multiple exposure to decipher, but it is too exhausting to consume consecutively. So I will wait until I am ready to consult the Lynch oracle again. To know what it means to love and to obey, to take control and let go, and face my fear of circus clowns, now that I have one.

The title of this so-called review is a little misleading because this is not a review; it is, as I stated in the opening paragraph, a recommendation. To call this a review would be equivalent to calling a biography of a prophet a review. ‘Inland Empire’ needs to be experienced in the true sense of the word. It is not a story, it is a message. The lesson is life from a teacher that you will not soon forget.

Just make sure that you find a theater with comfortable seats and that you are dehydrated, because you will not want to leave the movie for a break, possibly missing a glimpse of a truth that can not be. You will not be able to retain the facts because it’s all part of a Maybe Logic that embraces our collective. Just like life there are no absolutes in ‘Inland Empire’ and no guarantees of reality, however one thing is for certain, as the curtains descend, you will exit the theater from a Sinful Nina Simone wrap party.

CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK
Donovan, Lynch: Mellow fellows
The master of subconscious cinema and the Hurdy Gurdy Man promote Transcendental Meditation with freewheeling reminiscences.
By Ann Powers
Times Staff Writer

January 23, 2007

Since word got out that David Lynch and Donovan would appear together in three cities — New York, Washington and Hollywood — people have been buzzing about the unlikeliness of the pairing. What could the master of subconscious cinema share with the flower-power Hurdy Gurdy Man, beyond a devotion to Transcendental Meditation (TM), the spiritual path this mini-tour promoted? It was like putting Anne Rice and Bob Newhart on tour together because they're both Catholic. But Sunday at the Kodak Theatre, some signs emerged that Lynch and Donovan share more than a spiritual path.

David Lynch given lifetime award
Cult movie director David Lynch has received a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival.
Lynch, 60, has gained a reputation for complex films, including Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart and cult TV series Twin Peaks.

He was also at the festival to premiere his latest film, Inland Empire, which includes hallucinatory scenes and a talking rabbit voiced by Naomi Watts.

Lynch assured baffled critics "it's supposed to make perfect sense".

"Every film is like going into a new world, going into the unknown. But you should be not afraid of using your intuition, and feel and think your way through," he added.

Experimental movie

The director did not present his actors with a full script, instead handing them a few pages of dialogue each morning as they turned up to shoot their scenes.

The process took two-and-a-half years.

"It's important to be able to experiment," he said.

Star Laura Dern admitted even she was not sure what the film was about.

"The truth is I didn't know who I was playing - and I still don't know.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the film tonight to learn more," she said.
ON ROGER CORMAN:
Corman began his career in 1953 as a producer and screenwriter, and began directing in 1955. Until his so-called "retirement" as a director in 1971 (he continued to produce films even after this date) he would produce up to seven movies a year; his fastest film was perhaps The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), which was reputedly shot in two days and one night.

Roger Corman’s eye for talent and unique abilities as a mentor have launched a number of stellar careers. Graduates of the “Corman film school” include producers Jon Davison and Gale Anne Hurd; writers and writer/directors Robert Towne and John Sayles; actors Sandra Bullock, Charles Bronson, Robert DeNiro, Peter Fonda, Diane Ladd, Jack Nicholson, William Shatner, Talia Shire, Sylvester Stallone and directors Peter Bogdanovich, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, Carl Franklin, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.

ON “THE BIG SLEEP” (1946):
Director Howard Hawks transforms one of Raymond Chandler's best hard-boiled detective mysteries transformed into a film noir classic. It is a complex, logic-defying whodunit with a quintessential private detective (Marlowe), false leads, unforgettable dialogue and wisecracks, raw-edged characters, sexy women, tough action, gunplay, a series of electrifying scenes and screen violence, starring one of the most seductive on-screen couples, Bogie and Bacall.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085872/

*For films I own, my movie comments, and more, visit
http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list

*For those who dig Lynch (all y'all here, I assume!), this film marked the directorial debut of two of Lynch's collaborator's, Kathryn Bigelow & Monty Montgomery, as well as Willem Dafoe's first credited role in a movie. *

Review by ~ T.Paul

Now that this beautifully sculpted, wildly atmospheric, true-to-the-era in which it is set movie is on DVD, I've watched and re-watched it many times.

This is, by far, one of the finest films paying homage to the motorcycle enthusiasts (or outlaws, as it may be), settings, and characters of the 1950's that I've ever seen, and I own many, so any rockabilly guys or gals out there reading this review - this movie is for you! It's moody, sexy, violent, and slick - great eye-candy with an outstanding cast of characters.

This is more of a review of the DVD than of the whole film, and the spoilers are more DVD commentary-related than plot-related, so, if you've sen the DVD, read on if you wish. If ya haven't, you'll wanna after reading this!

The DVD has one of the better commentaries, featuring conversations with the film's co-writer/co-directors Kathryn Bigelow & Monty Montgomery, as well as the film's star, Willem Dafoe http://www.geocities.com/woosterdafoe/main.html . Dafoe credits the movie's directors for starting his career with this movie (the character of “Vance” was his first credited role), a fact which Monty Montgomery humbly shrugs off. They get into the movies they watched that directly influenced how "The Loveless" was shot, trivia notes, like how Robert Gordon http://www.robertgordon.dk/main.html , who was paid to score the flick blew all of the budget on on single calypso tune that is featured for a few minutes of the film. It would also seem that Gordon, who is most noted for being a rockabilly musician (and an excellent one at that!) was inadvertently cast while meeting with the film's directors. Gordon created some on-set tension that flickered mainly between himself and Dafoe, as Gordon felt that he was the only one on set who truly understood the whole biker/greaser world. Another fact to remember when looking at tghis movie - the days hit anywhere from 98 to 110 degrees fahrenheit on set and location, and during the entire movie, Dafoe is clad from head to foot in thick biker leathers - Ouch!!!

It is interesting to note that the movie was Bigelow's thesis for Columbia University's film class, as well as her directorial debut, and it must've earned her some high marks, as she's gone on to work with people like David Lynch http://www.davidlynch.de/ . Montgomery, too, has worked extensively with Lynch, producing "Wild At Heart", working on "Twin Peaks", and acting in "Mulholland Dr."

For those who expect this to be a biker exploitation flick (like "The Wild One" and all of its followers thereafter), you're in for a surprise. The directors intended for the audience to feel as if that is what they were in for while the initial scenes unfold, but as the story moves forward, we realize that it isn't so much a biker film but more of a kind of a wild-west movie. Monty Montgomery credits Edgar G. Ulmer's short, noir film "Detour" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037638/ as being the major influence as far as the style, the framing, and the shots of "The Loveless" go. He also credits Kenneth Anger's movie "Scorpio Rising" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058555/ as the movie that inspired the whole homo-eroticism of the biker world as presented in this, Montgomery’s earliest film.

For those interested in some trivia, here ya be - Originally titled "U.S. 17", which used to be a U.S. superhighway up until the 1960's when the I 95 highway replaced it as the major thruway from Georgia to Florida and up to New York, the entire film is shot on location along this now abandoned stretch of blacktop. Monty Montgomery, the movie's co-director, grew up in and around the Georgia area where the film was shot, and at the time of filming, the stretch of road was like a time capsule, with abandoned motels, diners, and gas stations along the way which had not changed since the 40's and the 50's. This made the reality of the movie much easier to capture, and cut down massively on the cost of what would have meant soundstage creations of all of these types of locations. I wonder if any of these places exist now, as the movie was done at the beginning of the 80's? I can only hope...

There is no disguising that this film focuses more on atmosphere than on plot, and there is no pretense to suggest that the directors intended anything else. Montgomery even refers to it as "eye-candy", and why not? Sometimes my eyes crave the cavities offered up by such sweet treats as "The Loveless"! There are many a long, lingering shot of beautiful vintage 'cycles being worked on, close ups on tattoos (one of the actors, Larry Matarese, who plays "La Ville", opted for an actual old-school pinup gal tattoo on his forearm before filming began), tension-creating pauses while characters look on sipping coffee in a diner or lean on a 50's Coke machine clad in leather and denim, and all of this works for the piece that this movie was meant to be.

It is somewhat of homage to "The Wild One", but only in that it deals with motorcycle enthusiast-rebels in the 50's - all other plot comparisons and similarities fall by the wayside.

Though they wished for a score that was more like Sergio Leone's large, sweeping, and melodramatic western film's scores, and they were held back by budgetary constraints, I felt what they did have to work with offered the film the nostalgic atmosphere perfectly. The score as it stands on the DVD (which, unfortunately is not on CD, record, or tape, darn it!) largely done by John Lurie http://www.strangeandbeautiful.com/ (of "The Lounge Lizards" fame, and also a regular in many Jim Jarmusch films), along with a minimal amount of tracks supplied by Robert Gordon, can be credited for being the cherry on top of this 50's diner served, tasty milkshake of a flick!

See ya ‘round,
T.Paul

I have a feeling that Lynch is now taking his own view of the city and it will be interesting to see his take on it, much like we saw Robert Towne's take on LA build throughout the seventies, eighties, and now with Ask the Dust, how he percieves historical LA.

Lynch Film a Cannes Mystery

Eccentric movie-maker David Lynch is so keen to keep the details of his new movie under wraps at the Cannes Film Festival, he has insisted that all posters remain covered until the film airs. The Twin Peaks director has corralled a group of his regular actors, like Laura Dern and Harry Dean Stanton, and teamed them up with Jeremy Irons for the mysterious thriller, reportedly called Inland Empire. The film will be unveiled at Cannes later this week, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lynch reveals, "It's about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and that's about all I want to say about it."
